Online Marketing Plan

by Patricia A. Simmons

You might have a Web site, but do you have an Online Marketing plan? Do you know how to get your Web site listed in the search engines and do you know how to get traffic to your Web site?

Link Popularity

Everyone with a Web site wants to be found in the search engines - easily. Consider having an Online Marketing plan as a portion of your overall business marketing plan. One way of accomplishing this is called Link Popularity. The more sites that link to you, the more traffic you can expect to receive to your site. More and more major search engines will rank your pages higher when you have many links to your Web site. These links must be relevant links to your web site. A few links from Web sites with a high link popularity score is more important than a larger number of links from less popular sites.

One way of obtaining relevant links to your Web site is to incorporate a linking strategy into your online marketing plan. The purpose of the linking strategy is to build appropriate inbound links to your site and help you achieve your overall business objectives. Part of this strategy is to exchange links with Web sites that complement your site and be a useful resource to your visitors. For example, a Web site that sells furniture might want to link exchange with an interior decorator's site.

If you want your Web site to work for you then you need to include an Online Marketing plan.

  • Optimized web copy is visitor oriented. It targets keywords and demonstrates the benefits of doing business with you. When writing web copy, it is important to stress what you can do for your web visitor rather than what you do.
  • Targeted keywords and phrases must be part of your web copy. You must use keywords and phrases within the normal text of your web site. It should not just be a listing of the words you want visitors to find.
  • Submission to search engines and directories is important. This should be done whenever major changes are made to your web site. There are several free submissions that can be made. There are also many paid inclusions (costing upwards from $30 per year.) Although they don't guarantee a specific position, these paid listings do guarantee that you will be listed within 72 hours. Usually it can take 6 to 8 weeks to get listed, and it's not guaranteed that you will be listed. Once you are listed, it's a good idea to monitor your page rank for specific keywords on a regular basis.

Offering an E-newsletter or sending E-cards can provide contact with your visitors and keep them returning to your web site.
